Supervisor Ed Smyth

Ed is finishing his first term as Huntington Town Supervisor.  The past three years he kept your taxes as low as possible, stopped over-development throughout the town, particularly in our downtown areas, and made town government work more efficiently for the residents.

Ed is the son of two immigrants who moved to Huntington in 1971.  He grew up in this beautiful town he still calls home.  He and his wife, Coriander, chose to raise their family here.  Ed is a practicing lawyer on Main Street for 28 years, served on the Town Council, and served as a U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant (res.).  Since elected to the Huntington Town Board as a Town Councilman in 2017, he has worked tirelessly to ensure Huntington is a place his children can return to, and one day raise their children.

Ed’s accomplishments in his first term

  • The balanced budget remains under the tax cap for the 8th consecutive year.  Moody’s and Fitch both maintain a Triple-A bond rating for Huntington.  The Town has a zero fiscal stress score by the NYS Comptroller with an operating surplus of $10,500,000.00. Real estate values remain high and the economic outlook for Huntington is very strong.
  • We amended the affordable housing rules in favor of volunteer firefighters and EMTs by putting them at the top of the waiting list.  This helps fire departments recruit new members and retain veterans.
  • Supports working men and women through jobsite safety and apprentice program requirements.
  • Your parks are well maintained despite record use by residents and sports leagues.  New facilities and playgrounds can be found in Heckscher Park, Al Walker Park, Otsego Park and Depot Road Park, just to name a few.
  • Your beaches have never been cleaner thanks to pollution controls, minimized surface runoff, and increased aquaculture programs growing oyster beds and sugar kelp.
  • The Highway Department has paved record lane-miles and expertly manages snow removal and stormwater drainage.
  • A new fleet of garbage trucks has made collection and recycling far more efficient, with less vehicle down-time.  We continue to rebuild the Town’s infrastructure and fleet of heavy equipment.
  • The newly formed Office of Film & Television is wildly successful.  There have been small and mid-sized productions in Town. Recently, Steven Spielberg filmed a scene for a major motion picture, demonstrating our ability to handle major productions.  Production companies provide significant fee revenue and economic benefits to the local economy.
