Ed’s accomplishments in his first term

Dear Friends,

I love this town and I love this job. I am running for re-election on my record. I ignore social media sensationalism and run a drama-free local government through old fashioned hard work. If you’re looking for entertainment from your elected officials, I’m not your guy.

My running mates are Andre Sorrentino for Highway Superintendent, Dr. Dave Bennardo, and Greg Grizopoulos for Town Council.

Please consider this before voting:

I’ve kept your taxes as low as possible, stopped over-development throughout the town, and made Town government work more efficiently for you. The budget remains under the tax cap for the 8th consecutive year with an operating surplus. Moody’s and Fitch both maintain a Triple-A bond rating for Huntington. The Town has a zero fiscal stress score by the NYS Comptroller. Town taxes are only 7% of your real estate tax bill. Real estate values remain high and the economic out- look for Huntington is very strong.

Same day permitting is now possible through the Town website. We amended the affordable housing rules in favor of volunteer firefighters and EMTs by putting them at the top of the waiting list. This helps fire departments recruit new volunteers and retain veterans. We support working men and women through jobsite safety and apprentice program requirements.

Your parks are well maintained despite record use by residents and sports leagues. New facilities and playgrounds can be found in Heckscher Park, Al Walker Park, Otsego Park and Depot Road Park, just to name a few. Your beaches have never been cleaner thanks to pollution control, minimized surface runoff, and increased aquaculture programs growing oyster beds and sugar kelp.

The Highway Department, led by Andre Sorrentino, has paved record lane-miles (more than doubling the previous record) and scraped over 200 recharge basins (sumps) that have been neglected for decades. A new fleet of garbage trucks has made collection and recycling far more efficient, with less vehicle down-time. We continue rebuilding the Town’s infrastructure and fleet of heavy equipment.

We look forward to the re-development of an economically viable, walkable downtown in Melville. The plan replaces vacant office buildings, squatters, property crimes, and tax grievances with a thriving social and cultural center for Melville. The plan provides residential options for young graduates and senior citizens alike to stay in Huntington.

Opponents have repeatedly misled residents about Melville. No new construction has been approved. In fact, as of this writing, nothing has even been submitted for consideration. The Town modified the code to allow proposals for consideration. It is important to point out that every proposal will go through the normal Planning Department process, a comprehensive environmental analysis, a stand-alone public hearing for the residents to weigh-in, and a vote by the Town Board.

Huntington is the cultural epicenter of Long Island. The newly formed Office of Film & Television is wildly successful. There have been small and mid-sized productions in Town. Recently, Steven Spielberg filmed a scene for a major motion picture, demonstrating our ability to handle major productions. Production companies provide significant fee revenue and economic benefits to the local economy.

Please vote for me and my running mates, Andre Sorrentino, Dr. Dave Bennardo, and Greg Grizopoulos. I look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail. For more information, please con-tact me at ElectEdSmyth@Gmail.com . Thank you!

All the best,

Edmund J. Smyth
